Overnight asbestos roof replacement works at 63 York Street in Sydney CBD

Project: 63 York Street, Sydney CBD Asbestos Removal, Roof Replacement & Wall Cladding

Case Study

63 York Street,
Sydney CBD

Location:

63 York Street, Sydney CBD

Size:

300 m²

Scope:

Asbestos removal, Roof Replacement & Wall Cladding

Challenge

Asbestos Removal in a busy CBD Location

This project involved the removal of existing asbestos roofing and the installation of new roofing and wall cladding systems on a building located on one of Sydney CBD's busiest streets. The combination of heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic along York Street, the building's significant height, and the hazardous nature of asbestos removal created complex safety, access and logistical challenges. Strict compliance with City of Sydney Council requirements was essential, while ensuring the safety of the public, neighbouring properties and project personnel.

Solution

Planned & Coordinated Overnight works, approvals & traffic management

A detailed project management and safety strategy was developed in close consultation with the City of Sydney Council. Extensive forward planning enabled the team to address site constraints, coordinate approvals and implement robust risk control measures before works commenced.

To minimise disruption and enhance public safety, all asbestos removal and reroofing works were scheduled and completed overnight. The project included the installation of new Custom Orb roof sheeting, Custom Orb wall cladding, insulation, box gutters and eaves gutters. Traffic control management was also required, coordinating road occupancy, deliveries and cranage operations to ensure safe project execution throughout the asbestos removal and reroofing process.

Outcome

Safe, Compliant Delivery with minimal disruption & a modern commercial finish

The project was delivered safely, efficiently and in full compliance with all City of Sydney Council requirements. Through careful planning and coordination, the team successfully mitigated the risks associated with asbestos removal in a high-profile CBD location while minimising disruption to the surrounding community. The client received a modern, durable roofing and cladding solution, and the building has since been transformed into a thriving commercial workspace occupied by multiple tenants. The successful delivery of the project demonstrates R.O. Steel Roofing's capability in managing complex asbestos removal and reroofing works in highly constrained urban environments.
