Russell Steel - Founder & Director

Russell Steel receiving the 2022 MRCAA Excellence in Metal Roofing Award

Winner, Excellence in Metal Roofing Awards 2022.

L-R: Mark Cain (MRCAA Executive Director), Russell Steel, Manny Tabone (MRCAA President/Director).

Originally from New Zealand, Russell moved to Australia at the age of 20 to install the newly introduced Decramastic roofing system, becoming one of the first roofing contractors in Australia to work with the product.

Working independently, he spent the next decade developing the practical skills, technical knowledge and work ethic that would form the foundation of his career.

Russell later progressed into high-end residential construction  before progressing into commercial roofing. Initially completing and managing projects himself, he gradually built teams to deliver larger and more complex work.

What began as a one-man operation grew into a respected roofing business servicing commercial and industrial warehouses, factories, shopping centres, Strata and multi-unit buildings in Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong, the Central Coast and East Coast NSW.

"With a name like Steel, roofing was never a career - it was a natural fit."

With more than 50 years of industry experience, Russell remains actively involved in R.O. Steel Roofing, providing leadership, practical knowledge and mentoring to the next generation while maintaining the standards that have shaped the business from the beginning.

Our Story

Strengthened Through Hard Work

In the early years, Russell completed much of the work himself, loading and installing roofs single-handedly on steep and challenging roofing projects in Church Point, NSW, before gradually building the experienced teams that support the business today.

Pamela worked alongside Russell from the beginning, helping keep the business moving while raising their young family — on the day their first child was born, she was handing out pay packets on a Woolloomooloo building site.

Those early years shaped the practical, hands-on and committed approach that remains part of the business today — doing what was needed to get the job done properly.

Looking Ahead

The Next Generation

Today, Russell and Pamela’s son, Joel, is a major part of the R.O. Steel Roofing team.

Working alongside Russell, Joel brings fresh energy, strong capability and a modern approach, while continuing the values and standards that have shaped the business from the beginning.

With over 50 years of individual roofing experience, Russell provides a strong foundation, and with Joel bringing his own extensive experience and perspective, clients can be confident the business will continue to deliver the same level of experience, capability and standards into the future.

Our Roots

A Family Business Built from the Ground Up

Russell and Pamela married in 1986 and started their first roofing company together soon after. What began as a small family operation steadily developed into the established commercial roofing business it is today.

The business has grown with the industry, but the principles behind it have remained the same: quality workmanship, reliable service, clear communication and taking responsibility for every project from start to finish. These values have helped build long-term client relationships, with repeat clients now accounting for almost 60% of our work.

Our Approach

Driven by commitment. Shaped by experience

More than 50 years of roofing experience has given R.O. Steel Roofing the practical knowledge to understand what each project requires.

From straightforward re-roofing through to complex asbestos removal, wall cladding and occupied-building projects, we apply the appropriate level of planning, coordination and communication to deliver works professionally, safely and with minimal disruption.
