Challenge
7,500m² Reroof Around a Live Production Line
This project involved the removal and replacement of approximately 7,500m² of asbestos roofing and wall cladding within an operational food manufacturing facility.
A key project requirement was maintaining uninterrupted production throughout the works. Site access was heavily restricted, with work permitted only during scheduled shutdown periods. Materials were delivered on Fridays, with crews working throughout Saturday and until 2:00pm Sunday before the facility resumed normal operations.
The project was completed in carefully planned stages with works delivered across seven tightly scheduled weekend shutdowns over a four-month period.
Detailed planning, strict contamination control measures and close coordination with site management were required to ensure food production areas remained protected at all times.
Solution
Temporary Partition Walls & Seven Staged Weekend Shutdowns
The asbestos removal, reroofing and wall cladding replacement works were completed in a series of planned stages, aligned with the facility's production schedule and limited access windows.
Temporary plastic partition walls were installed within the facility to isolate active work areas from food production zones and maintain strict hygiene and contamination control requirements.
Each stage followed a strict asbestos management process, including site preparation, containment measures, asbestos removal, independent air monitoring, detailed cleaning, and the issuing of clearance certificates before the area was returned to operation.
All asbestos materials were safely removed and replaced with new Zincalume Trimdek roof sheeting, insulation and wall cladding. A new Zincalume box gutter system with spun aluminium sumps was also installed to improve stormwater management and long-term performance.
Outcome
A Full Upgrade Without Halting Production
Despite restricted access, weekend-only work schedules and the complexities of operating within a live food manufacturing environment, the project was successfully completed with minimal disruption to production.
The result was a fully upgraded roof and wall cladding system delivered under strict safety, hygiene and compliance requirements, demonstrating our ability to manage complex asbestos replacement projects while keeping critical business operations running.
