The project won the 2022 Metal Roofing & Cladding Association of Australia (MRCAA) Excellence in Metal Roofing Award in the Industrial – Roofing and/or Cladding (Roof Value Less Than $1 Million) category. The award was presented for the Fordland project at 22 Powers Road, Seven Hills.

Challenge
Creating a precise, symmetrical façade
This project involved the re-roofing and re-cladding of an existing warehouse within an industrial estate, with the goal of transforming the building into a standout architectural feature.
A key challenge was achieving precise symmetry across the façade. The checkerboard design required careful planning, accurate set-out, exact measurements and custom flashings to ensure clean lines, balanced proportions and a consistent finish across the entire building.
Solution
Custom Framing & Checkerboard Cladding
During the design phase, Russell Steel, Managing Director of R.O. Steel Roofing Pty Ltd, worked closely with the client and proposed a distinctive checkerboard façade concept incorporating the client’s company logo colours.
To support the new façade, the existing wall cladding was retained and a top hat framing system was installed over the structure. New cladding was then installed in both vertical and horizontal orientations to create a bold 3D visual effect and architectural finish.
Outcome
An Award-Winning Warehouse Transformation
The completed project delivered a visually striking transformation that became a focal point within the industrial estate.
The project demonstrated a high level of craftsmanship, innovation and attention to detail, resulting in a standout commercial building and industry recognition as winner of the 2022 Excellence in Metal Roofing Awards.
